Starting their career as a duo in the silent film era, they later successfully transitioned to 'talkies'. PACK UP YOUR TROUBLES, with Stanley Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Donald Dillaway, Jacquie Lyn, Mary Carr, James Finlayson, Richard Cramer, Adele Watson, Tom Kennedy, Charles Middleton, Muriel Evans, Grady Sutton, Montague Shaw and Billy Gilbert directed by George Marshall and Raymond McCarey a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer production. Laurel and Hardy were a comedy duo act during the early Classical Hollywood era of American cinema, consisting of Englishman Stan Laurel (18901965) and American Oliver Hardy (18921957). They are chased until they are well out of breath, but as luck has it, the banker is the child's grandfather.There are several good bits while Laurel and Hardy are in uniform and also when they are under fire in the trenches.Duke Ellington, Benny Rubin, Mills, Kirk and Martin, James Barton and Frances Williams are among the entertainers in the stage production. They go to a banker and lead him to think that they have a chain of restaurants, and somehow or other they succeed, after a bust has fallen on the financier's head and knocked him unconscious, in getting some money.
They have no initials for this old man Smith and they search the directory, going to every Smith, carefully checking off the Smiths they have visited.They subsequently make a living by running a lunch wagon, and they are forced to keep on the move because an inspector from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children haunts them, little knowing that the two men are not only caring for the child as well as they can, but also spending most of the time looking for Grandfather Smith.Laurel and Hardy decide that they need further capital to run their business.
After the war, Laurel and Hardy, following various onslaughts, gain possession of the youngster and then bend their efforts to find the child's grandfather. One of their war buddies is a man named Smith, whose wife has left him and whose child is being cared for by two worthless people. She ponders and hesitates as she goes on and the sleepy-eyed Laurel eventually is presumed to find the story has the effect of causing him to slumber.Jacquie Lyn is a little English girl who is 3 years old and in spite of this tender age she has already appeared in several film features and is a diligent member of Hal Roach's "Our Gang" comedies.Laurel and Hardy in this rowdy narrative first appear as two idlers who are picked up and put into uniform by a recruiting sergeant. In a comedy such as this it comes as a pleasing relief, for the youngster evidently takes the telling of her little tale very seriously.
Enough scenery is destroyed here to please any manufacturer of stage sets and both these comics receive enough punishment to kill a dozen ordinary men.There is one really delightful sequence in this production and it happens when a child named Jacquie Lyn tells Stan Laurel a bedtime story. "Pack Up Your Troubles," with Laurel and Hardy, is the boisterous and sometimes funny picture at the Capitol.
